Women's Swimming In Third After Day One Of GNAC Championship

BOSTON, Mass. - Elms College freshman Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) set a new Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) record in the 200-yard freestyle and set a school record in the 500-yard freestyle to help pace the Blazers to a third place finish in day one of the GNAC Championship.

Host Simmons College finished the day in first with a score of 130 while St. Joseph College (Conn.) edged Elms with a score 113. The Blazers registered a 112 to round out the top three in the six team field.

DeGrazia raced to a first place finish in a GNAC record setting time 2:05.66 in the 200-yard freestyle and clocked a 5:36.01 in the 500-yard freestyle to set a new Elms school record in the event.

Freshman Ashley Kirchner (Dalton, Mass.) posted a time of 2:22.25 in the 200-yard individual medley to set a new Blazers' school record, while also capturing first in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 28.80.

Sophomores Tessa Dudunake (Northampton, Mass.) and Emalee Furtek (Ludlow, Mass.) placed first and second in the 50-yard freestyle clocking times of 26.20 and 26.63 respectively, while sophomore Chalis Bird (Windsor, Mass.) touched the wall in fourth (27.22).

Dudunake also came in second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.22) while Furtek finished fourth in the 50-yard butterfly (29.60).

Freshman Julia Lane (West Springfield, Mass.) also contributed scoring times of 2:34.50 in the 200-yard backstroke and 2:12.34 in the 200-yard freestyle earning fifth and sixth place honors respectively.

The team of DeGrazia, Dudunake, Kirchner and Furtek concluded day one action gliding to a new meet and school record time in the 400-yard medley relay of 4:22.04.

Elms returns to GNAC Championship action on Sunday with the first event slated for 10:00 a.m.
