CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior goalkeeper Erika Aponte (Palmer, Mass.) had four saves and sophomore midfielder Melissa Welch (Westfield, Mass.) had four shots on goal, but Western New England University used a goal and an assist from Brionna Voight (Springfield, Mass.) to help pace the Golden Bears to a 2-0 victory in Tuesday evening's non-conference women's soccer game at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms moves to 2-4-1 overall while Western New England improves to 5-3-1 on the season.

Voight put the Golden Bears ahead, 1-0 11 minutes into the contest when she converted a penalty kick. Nine minutes before intermission, Voight found Chelsea Kuzio (Hampden, Maine) who deposited the ball into the back of the net to give Western New England a 2-0 advantage which it held until halftime.

Both teams totaled eight shots in the first 45 minutes. Aponte made four saves for the Blazers, while her counterpart Briana Kubik (Blandford, Mass.) notched three saves.

In the second half, Elms outshot the Golden Bears, 10-5 but Kubik made five stops. Elms' sophomore net-minder Alexa Rinaudo (Bellmore, N.Y.) made two saves to keep the game at 2-0.

Voight and Sarah Marois (Waterford, N.Y.) had two shots on goal each for Western New England.

The Blazers return to conference action on Saturday, September 28 at Lesley University at 4:00 p.m.
