Women's Basketball Register First Victory of Season

CHICOPEE, Mas. - Elms senior forward Denisha Parks (Fall River, Mass.) led the Blazers to an overwhelming win in their first New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) matchup of the season. Parks scored 20 in the first half en-route to a season high 26 points.

Elms started the game quickly going on a 9-0 run followed by a 9-2 run which included sophomore guard Emily Burr (East Hartford, Conn.) knocking down a three to bring the score to 18-2. Newbury tried to battle back but had no answer for the Blazers hot shooting as they went on a 19-7 run which increased their lead to 28. Newbury made a few free throws to slow the bleeding and finished the half trailing Elms 43-13. Parks led the half with 20 points.

The Blazers added 24 more points in the second half to finish the game with 67 points, a season high. Elms shot 33.8% from the field on 24-71, while Newbury put up 19.2% of their shots on 10-52 shooting. Newbury senior center Jamie Vankoeverden (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded game-high 16 rebounds, but Elms took the game total with the help from senior forward JC Pickett (Chicopee, Mass.) with 11. Junior guard Mariah Brown (Windsor Locks, Conn.) recorded a game high 6 assists.

The Blazers improve their record to 1-4 and continue their NECC action on Thursday, December 2nd when Daniel Webster travels to Picknelly Arena at 7 p.m.

The Nighthawks fall to 1-6 on the season and travel to Lesley University on Thursday, December 2nd.
