Women's Basketball Falls to Bridgewater State in Overtime

Senior forward Denisha Parks (Fall River, Mass.) hit a three-pointer with :03 left in the second half to send the game to overtime, but the Blazers fell to the Bears in overtime 70-63.

Bridgewater came out quick, starting the game on a 11-1 run. The Bears had their largest lead of their game when Stephanie Desantis (Walpole, Mass) stole the ball and banked in a layup to go up 21-10. Elms narrowed the lead to 6 to end the half.

Elms came out strong in the second half when Parks stole the ball from Vanesa Conceicao (New Bedford, Mass.) and scored on a fast break. The Blazers then went on a 10-4 run which included Gianna Youngblood scoring in the paint to tie the game 35-35 with 14:53 remaining in the game. Elms took their first their first lead of the game when Parks found Octavia McAllister (Springfield, Mass) in the paint to go ahead 37-35. Elms and the Bears played back-and-fourth basketball until Emily Burr buried a three to bring the score to 49-45, and then Mariah Brown (Windsor Locks, Conn.) put down a free throw to grab their largest lead of the game at 5 with 6:11 remaining. Bridgewater battled back and retained the lead with 4:10remaining when Conceicao hit a layup. The Bears were up 53-50 with :18 but the Blazers weren't finished. Brown found Parks in the corner, and she buried the three to tie the game with :05 seconds.

The overtime started with Parks sinking two free throws, but Bridgewater came back with a 10-2 run. The Bears outscored Elms 14-7 in overtime.

Parks led the team with a team high 20 points and 14 rebounds while adding an assist and 2 steals. JC Pickett (Chicopee, Mass) also turned in a double-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds while also tallying an assist, 2 blocks and a steal. Jennie Lindland (Edgartown, Mass) led the Bears with 18 points, while gathering 5 boards, 2 assists, 3 blocks and 4 steals. Conceicao had 17 points and 2 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 block, and 2 steals.

The Blazers shot 32.9% from the field on 23-70 and 4-13 from behind the arc. The Bears hit 40% on 28-70 and 1-14 from behind the arc.

The Blazers fall to 0-4 on the season while Bridgewater improves to 4-0. The Blazers travel to Anna Maria on Saturday November 22.
