Track and Field Finds Success In Inaugural Meet

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Elms College men's and women's track and field squads made their collegiate debut at the Wesleyan Spring Classic, hosted by Wesleyan College, Saturday afternoon. With the event being the Blazers first in program history, 13 new school records were set. 

On the men's side, junior Donald Whittle (Somers, Conn.) won the long jump event with a new school record distance of 6.71 meters. Senior Trifon Bish (St. Catherine, Jamaica) posted a pair of second-place finishes in the long jump (6.62m) and the triple jump with a new school record of 13.42 meters. Freshman Babba Jaden (Clarkston, Ga.) logged two top-ten finishes, placing fifth in the triple jump (12.09m) and ninth in the long jump (5.78m). Sophomore Anthony Romei (Enfield, Conn.) claimed eighth in the triple jump (10.32m) and 15th in the 800 meter run in a school-record time of 2:14.33. Freshman Edwin Burgos (Boston, Mass.) finished 13th in the 100 meter dash with a school-record time of 12.28, while junior Tony Luciani (Agawam, Mass.) took 14th in the 200 meter dash in a school record time of 29.01. Junior Nick Bergstrom (Derry, N.H.) finished 15th in the 200 meter dash (29.50) and 18th in the 400 meter dash in a school-record time of 1:07.10. Freshman Rich Hernandez (North Branford, Conn.) placed 13th in the 3000 meter run with a school-record time of 10:45.37 and 27th in the 800 meter run (2:23.25). Freshman Adrian Wong took 31st in the 800 meter run with a time of 5:25.73.

For the women's team, junior Sarah Tatgenhorst (Winterport, Maine) finished eighth in the 400 meter dash with a new school record time of 1:11.21. Freshman Alizaya Clark (Springfield, Mass.) placed 10th in the long jump with a new school record of 4.30 meters, while classmate Samantha Weigel (Palmer, Mass.) took 12th in the long jump at 4.13 meters. Junior Rachel Connell (Easthampton, Mass.) finished 20th in the 100 meter dash with a new school-record time of 15.32 seconds. Junior Latisha Rocke (Amherst, Mass.) finished 23rd in the 200 meter dash in a school record time of 33.84. Freshman Emma Morton (Southwick, Mass.) placed 28th in the 1500 meter run with a new school record time of 6:08.85. Sophomore Nika Orsaris (Hartford, Conn.) claimed 22nd in the 100 meter (15.77), followed by junior Trisha Doret (Boston, Mass.) in 24th (15.87), freshman Yoselyn Feliz (Springfield, Mass.) at 29th (17.01), and sophomore Genny Paige (Yarmouthport, Mass.) at 30th with a  time of 17.40. Freshman Meghan Ballentine (Gardner, Mass.) took 24th in the 200 meter (33.89) and 26th in the 100 meter (16.13), while sophomore Amanda Rotberg (Rowley, Mass.) finished 25th in the 200 meter (36.79) and 28th in the 100 meter (16.96). The 4x200 relay team of Weigel, Clark, Orsaris, Doret, Connell and Tatgenhorst placed second in a new school record time of 2:07.60.

The Blazers will look to build on their success with they return to action at the Tufts University Snowflake Classic next Saturday.
