CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College women's soccer team overcame an early goal from visiting Western New England University to capture a 2-1 win in a non-conference clash at Leary Field Wednesday night. With the win, the Blazers improve to 6-2 on the season, while Western New England dips to 3-3-1 overall.

Off the kickoff, the Golden Bears pressured the ball in the Blazers zone and delivered an early strike as senior Maddie Morgan (Upton, Mass.) played a ball into the box for classmate Danielle Dixon (Plainville, Conn.), who rushed to the net. Elms sophomore keeper Rebecca Molin (West Hartford, Conn.) denied Dixon's initial attempt, but couldn't control the loose ball, allowing Dixon to knock in the rebound and hand the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead with 44:12 on the clock.

In the 8th minute of action, the Blazers drew a foul on the Golden Bears in the Western New England box, resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for Elms. On the ensuing attempt, junior Kelsey Shea (Belchertown, Mass.) placed a low shot past the right side of Golden Bears sophomore keeper Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.) to even the score at 1-1. The sides remained tied heading into halftime.

Less than eight minutes into the second half, Elms senior Brie Voight (Springfield, Mass.) was taken down in the box near the goal, resulting in another penalty kick chance for the Blazers. Shea stepped up for the Blazers again, beating Lemekha to her left side, putting Elms ahead 2-1. The Blazers defense held off late surges by the Golden Bears to secure the 2-1 victory.

Western New England edged the Blazers in the shot column, 10-8, during the contest. Molin posted four saves in the win, while Lemekha stopped for shots for the Golden Bears.

The Blazers will return to the pitch with a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) road trip to Lesley Saturday afternoon for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff. Western New England hosts Salve Regina in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
