Jovanny Torres Picked As NECC Rookie Of The Week

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Elms College freshman Jovanny Torres was selected as the New England Collegiate Conference men's volleyball Rookie of the Week for his performance against top-ranked Springfield College, the league announced on Monday.

Torres turned in an all-around stellar performance against the Pride, racking up nine kills with a .350 hitting percentage and adding 11 assists. Torres also had two digs and a block in the contest.

Torres' performance helped the Blazers stay neck-and-neck with the No. 1 team in Division III, but Springfield eventually extended its hitting streak to 21-games with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 win over Elms.

Torres becomes the fourth Blazer to earn NECC men's volleyball Rookie of the Week honors this season. He joins teammates Jeremy Torres (Jan. 29, Mar. 19), Jake Johnson (Feb. 5) and Martin Acevedo (Feb. 26).

Elms will be back on the court on Tuesday in a pivotal NECC matchup against conference-frontrunner Endicott. The Gulls enter Picknelly Arena at 8-0 in NECC play, and dealt the Blazers their only conference loss this season. A Blazer win could keep Elms' hopes of hosting a potential NECC championship match alive.
