Torres Earns AVCA Freshman Of The Year; Honorable Mention All-America Nods

LEXINGTON, Ky. – After a dominant rookie campaign, Elms College freshman Jovanny Torres has been selected as the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III National Freshman of the Year, the AVCA announced on Monday. Torres was also one of three players nationally to be recognized as an honorable mention All-American.

Torres, who was announced as the New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Year a week ago, helped lead Elms to a 20-7 record, a 10-2 NECC mark, the NECC championship, NCAA Tournament and the program’s first-ever national ranking.

The setter/outside hitter hit .352 for the season, the second-best mark then NECC and 23rd in all of Division III. He averaged 2.26 kills per set and 2.22 assists per set. He also ranked third on the team with 1.46 digs per set.

Torres was also a first-team all-NECC selection, NECC all-tournament team honoree, and NECC Rookie of the Week once during the regular season.
