Cook Breaks Program's Career Hits Record in Loss at Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Elms College Baseball team traveled to Springfield College for a non-conference game on Thursday afternoon.
BASICS
Score: Elms College 2 | Springfield College 18
Records: Blazers 7-13, 2-3 (GNAC) | Pride 6-14, 1-3 (NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Elms started off up 1-0 when graduate student infielder AJ Cook (Mendon, Mass.) scored off of a wild pitch to put the Blazers in the lead. Cook also became the Elms all-time hits leader in this game after a leadoff single up the middle in the first inning and a single in the third, an outstanding accomplishment that will stand for a long time. However, after this, Springfield College went on a huge run, scoring 18 runs. Their third game in three days, the Elms pitching staff and bullpen struggled, allowing a slew of runs and struggling to produce enough offense to keep up, but would be able produce five strikeouts, between first year Sal Ortiz (Springfield, Mass.), graduate student Kyle Sebastyanski (Auburn, Mass.), sophomore Evan Dougherty (Burlington, Conn.), and senior Nick Kreuzuer (Suffield, Conn.). Throughout the game, the Blazers offense would see singles by senior outfielder George Chaya Jr. (Methuon, Mass.), Kreuzuer, sophomore utility player Andrew Ciaglo (Hadley, Mass.), junior outfielder Nason Busca (Windsor, Conn.), and a double from sophomore Melvin Perez (Syosset, N.Y.). Defensivley, Elms would be able to turn two double plays to try their best to hold off the Pride offense. In the sixth inning, sophomore infielder Jacob Perez (Manchester, Conn.) recorded a one-run single to drive in junior pitcher/outfielder Nason Busca (Windsor, Conn.), but Elms was unable to score any more runs, losing in seven innings 18-2.
