Men's Volleyball Opens Season With Spilt at SUNY-Poly

MARCY, N.Y. – The Elms College men's volleyball team kicked off the 2016 campaign by splitting a pair of matches in the first day of action at the 2016 SUNY-Polytechnic Tournament, held at the Wildcat Field House Friday evening. The Blazers fell to fourth-ranked Nazareth College, 3-0 (10-25, 7-25, 19-25), and then swept Bard in three sets, 25-17, 25-19, 25-21.

Elms sits at 1-1 on the season, while Nazareth opens the year at 2-0, and Bard slips to 0-2 overall.

Against #4 Nazareth, sophomore Daniel Bondarovsky (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) led the Blazers offensively with a team-high eight kills with a dig and a block. Junior Austin DeCosmo (Southwick, Mass.) and sophomore Gabriel Reis Levy (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) chipped in three kills apiece, while senior Angel Castro (Carolina, Puerto Rico) added a pair of kills. Freshman John Dunphy (Farmington, Conn.) dished out a team-high 10 assists in his collegiate debut.

In the sweep of Bard, Bondarovsky slammed a match-high 13 kills with only one error on 18 attempts, while adding two blocks. Reis Levy knocked nine kills and Castro registered eight kills with a match-high nine digs. Dunphy set a career-high with 28 assists and seven digs, while DeCosmo and junior Qua'Sean Crowe (Stamford, Conn.) tallied four kills each.

The Blazers will wrap up play at the 2016 SUNY-Polytechnic Tournament with two matches Saturday. Elms battles Sage College at 11 a.m., followed by a tilt with tournament host SUNY-Poly at 1:00 p.m.
