CHICOPEE, Mass. -- The Elms College and Fitchburg State men's soccer teams opened the 2018 season on Elms' home turf Friday night, with the visiting Falcons earning a 3-0 victory.
A goal right before halftime by Yannick DePina (Boston, Mass.) gave Fitchburg State a 1-0 lead at the break. DePina added another in the second half and Jeremiah Maki (Westminster, Mass.) scored a goal of his own to make it 3-0. Branton Abbet (Jasper, Ind.) had three saves for the Falcons.
Elms outshot Fitchburg State 10-9, with Anthony Romei (Enfield, Conn.) putting up two shots on goal and Pedro Duarte (Chicopee, Mass.) adding a shot on goal of his own, but were unable to capitalize. Goalkeeper AJ Oliviera (Beacon Falls, Conn.) had two saves for the Blazers.
Elms (0-1) will host Nichols College on Sept. 5 at 4:00 p.m. Fitchburg State's (1-0) next game will be their home opener on Sept. 5 at 6:30 p.m. where they will take on Gordon.
