Men's Basketball Falls at Johnson & Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Elms College Men's Basketball team fell to rival Johnson &Wales Saturday afternoon 78-98 in non-conference action at the Wildcat Center. With the loss the Blazers fall to 3-6 on the season while the Wildcats improve to 8-1 overall.

The Blazers offense started off slow as the Wildcats nailed two uncontested three point bullets opening the contest with a 6-0 lead. The Blazers ultimately geared into motion at the 18:48 mark where a Jerry Buchanon (Windsor, Conn.) three pointer sailed into the net sparking momentum. Andre Wright (Danbury, Conn.) and Conny Ihearhu (Largo, Md.)  were able to both hit the three-point mark within the first four minutes as well upping the score to 9-12. The Wildcats sprinted to a seven point run, led off the hands of Quarry Greenaway (Westchester, N.Y.)  who was able to notch two jump shots and a pair of free throws under Johnson & Wales belt at the 15:02 mark. Buchanon would go on to score 15 points in the half going 2-from-4 at the three point arc. With 1:14 remaining in the first a late foul would send Buchanon to the line to net a pair of free throws that would send the Blazers to the locker room holding onto a 41-58 deficit.

Elms came out steady to open the second starting off with a Buchanon jumper at the 19:16 mark followed by an Ihearhu tally that would bring the score to 45-62. The basket would lead to a seven point run for Elms led by Buchanon going 5- for -5 from the field. Symon Smith (Oklahoma City, Okla.) chipped in two in the breakaway, however the Wildcats plowed ahead full force as a Greenway dunk rang high at the Wildcat Center. Johnson and Wales would take that momentum and run with it as they continued to extend their lead throughout the remainder of the contest ultimately ending the afternoon with a Matt Madoin (North Kingstown, RI.) three pointer at the 17 second mark to close out the victory.

 Buchanon led the Blazers with 26 points and three steals, shooting 9 –of- 14 from the floor. Ihearhu collected 16 points and five rebounds in the effort. Smith tallied 14 points as well going 2-for-4 on three point attempts.

The Wildcats were paced by game high scorer Tom Garrick who collected 28 points going 13- for- 25 on the floor while collecting five rebounds. Greenway tallied 27 points and six rebounds for Johnson and Wales.

The Wildcats edged the Blazers in rebounding (35-26) and points in the paint (52-26). The Blazers totaled 50.9% from the field (27 of 53), including 33.3% from the three-point line (6-18), and 81.8% from the foul line (18-22). Johnson and Wales shot 58.0% from the floor (40-69), 37.5% from three point range (9-24), and 60.0% from the foul line (9-15).

The Blazers will travel to Trinity (Conn.) for a non-conference tilt Thursday January 7th at 7:00 p.m. The Wildcats will host Fisher at home December 14th at 7:00 p.m.
