Baseball Earns Double-Header Sweep of Newbury College, 4-1 and 13-3

BROCKTON, Mass. – The Elms College baseball team earned a sweep of Newbury College posting scores of 4-1 and 13-3 during Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Mass.

With the sweep, Elms improves to 7-9 overall, 2-1 in NECC action, while Newbury moves to 6-15 overall, 2-8 in NECC play. The teams will play the third game in the series on Sunday, April 7 at 12:00 p.m. at MacKenzie Stadium in Holyoke, Mass.

Elms 4, Newbury 1

In game one, Elms' senior left-hander John Russell (Springfield, Mass.) tossed a complete-game four-hitter allowing just one unearned run in seven innings pitched and struck out three batters to improve to 1-1 on the season

The Blazers scored single runs in the first, second, third and seventh innings and Elms' offensive efforts were highlighted by junior left fielder Alex King (Lebanon, Conn.) who was 2 for 4 with a triple, junior catcher Zachary Dreher (Naugatuck, Conn.) was 2 for 3 with an RBI and junior designated hitter Sam Farnsworth (Westfield, Mass.) was 1 for 4 with two RBI. Freshman third baseman Brian Langdon (Beacon Falls, Conn.) added a double in the win.

Chris Ninteau (Lisbon, Conn.) suffered the complete-game loss for Newbury allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out four batters. The Nighthawks received two hits from Ryan Zahornasky (Shelton, Conn.) to highlight four hits in the game.

Elms 13, Newbury 3

In the second game, Elms exploded for six runs in both the third and fifth innings to stake its 13-3 victory.

Farnsworth led the charge at the dish going 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI, while senior center fielder Stephen Fisher (West Boylston, Mass.), sophomore first baseman Geoffrey Frost (Ludlow, Mass.) and Langdon drove in two runs each.

Freshman right fielder Dan McCormack (Shelton, Conn.), Langdon and freshman second baseman Aedin Wadja (Lebanon, Conn.) each added two hits in the winning effort.

Junior pitcher Curtis LeBeau (Auburn, Mass.) pitched all seven innings allowing three runs (two earned) on 11 hits while striking out three to improve to 1-2 on the season.

Newbury pounded out 11 hits highlighted by a 3 for 4 effort from Michael Perillo (Mansfield, Mass.) while Justin MacCutcheon (Woburn, Mass.) was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Ryan Sinclair (Portsmouth, R.I.) pitched four innings and suffered the loss for the Nighthawks.
