Baseball Swept by Wisconsin Lutheran, 8-4 and 3-0

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Elms College baseball team suffred 8-4 and 3-0 losses to Wisconsin Lutheran on Thursday afternoon during Gene Cusic Classic action in Fort Myers, Fla.

With the losses, Elms moves to 4-4 on the season and concludes Gene Cusic Classic action on Friday, March 15 at 10:00 a.m. against Monmouth College.

In the first game, Wisconsin Lutheran jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Elms rallied and cut its deficit in half. Blazers' junior designated hitter Sam Farnsworth (Westfield, Mass.) and freshman shortstop Nolan Medeiros (Taunton, Mass.) each drove in a run with singles to set the score at 4-2 after one frame.

Wisconsin Lutheran got the two runs back in the top of the second and pushed across one run in both the third and fifth frames to stake a 8-2 lead.

The Blazers struck for two runs in the bottom of the sixth stanza when sophomore first baseman Geoffrey Frost (Ludlow, Mass.) doubled in Medeiros who reached on a one-out infield single earlier in the frame. Freshman second baseman Aedin Wadja (Lebanon, Conn.) then delivered a sacrifice fly sending junior catcher Zachary Dreher (Naugatuck, Conn.) home with Elms' fourth run of the contest and set the score at 8-4.

Elms' senior lefty starter John Russell (Springfield, Mass.) pitched four innings and suffered the loss, while freshman reliever Bryan Leonard (Vernon, Conn.) pitched three innnings of scoreless relief in the no-decision.

Medeiros finished with two hits in the game.

In game two, Elms was held to just two hits – one each by freshman left fielder Dan McCormack(Shelton, Conn.) and sophomore catcher Kevin Dwire (Ellington, Conn.).

Wisconsin Lutheran scored single runs in the bottom of the first, third and fifth innings.

Blazers' junior hurler Curtis LeBeau (Auburn, Mass.) issued five strikeouts and scattered just four hits while giving up three runs (two earned) in a complete-game effort on the hill.
