City of Boston, Dreher and Leal Garner NECC Weekly Accolades

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Elms College junior catcher Zachary Dreher (Naugatuck, Conn.) was named New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Player of the Week and junior pitcher Derek Leal (Charlton, Mass.) was named NECC Pitcher of the Week alongside the city of Boston which was named an honorary Player of the Week following the recent tragedy during Marathon Monday.

The City of Boston, including the Boston Police Department, emergency medical services and first responders, have been named an honorary "Player of the Week" by the NECC.

Each Monday, the NECC recognizes outstanding performances by student-athletes of its member institutions from the week's athletic events. The tremendous effort by the Boston Police Department, emergency medical services and first responders as well as the residents of Boston and the surrounding communities deserved note.

Dreher earned his first player of the week award after hitting .345 during Elms' eight-game week helping the Blazers to a 7-1 record during the stretch. He was 10 for 29 with a 5 for 5 effort against Springfield College on April 17. He also scored three of his six runs against the Pride. Dreher drove in six runs as well, including three each in game one against Lesley University and game two against Southern Vermont College.

Leal helped Elms to a 7-1 week winning both of his starts in complete-game fashion. Leal allowed one run on six hits and struck out four in a 9-1 win over Lesley University in seven innings. Leal followed that with a 4-1 win over Southern Vermont allowing one run on six hits with seven strikeouts in seven frames of work. This is Leal’s first NECC Pitcher of the Week award this season.
