Baseball Tops Monmouth College, 5-1

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Elms College baseball team concluded Gene Cusic Classic action with a 5-1 victory over Monmouth College (Ill.) on Friday morning in Fort Myers, Fla.

With the win, Elms returns to Chicopee, Mass. following its spring break trip 5-4 overall.

Elms' freshman pitcher Thomas Weldon (Springfield, Mass.) pitched a complete game, fanning seven batters in nine hinnings. He scattered five hits and walked three batters in addition to giving up just one run on a sacrifice fly.

Elms, which scored a run in each of the first four innings and added a tally in the eighth, received a two-RBI effort from junior first baseman Alex King (Lebanon, Conn.), while freshman outfielder Dan McCormack (Shelton, Conn.) was 1 for 2 with three walks and three runs scored in the win.

Elms' senior center fielder Stephen Fisher (West Boylston, Mass.) reached base on a fielder's choice in the first inning, stole second, and then scored on a two-out base hit by junior Sam Farnsworth (Westfield, Mass.).

In the second, Fisher delivered an RBI of his own plating McCormack who walked, stole second and then scored on Fisher's double.

The Blazers' notched their third run of the contest when sophomore Brady Forrest (Hampden, Mass.) reached on an error and later came around to score on another misplay by the Monmouth defense.

McCormack crossed the dish on an RBI single by King in the bottom of the fourth inning and the two repeated the feat in the eighth inning to complete Elms' 5-1 win.

Elms returns to action on Thursday, March 21 when it travels to Lesley University for a single game at 7:00 p.m.
