Smith Edges Women's Swimming

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College women's swimming team fell just short of visiting Smith College, 128-101, in a dual meet at Partyka Natatorium Tuesday evening.

The Blazers women's squad registered four first-place finishes, led by freshman Kelly Scianna (Milford, Conn.), who touched the wall first in the 200 meter backstroke (2:47.41) and the 200 meter IM (2:51.37), along with a second-place finish in the 200 meter freestyle (2:27.67). Junior Aislinn Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.) posted a first-place finish in the 50 meter freestyle (31.10) and third-place finishes in the 100 meter freestyle (1:13.65) and the 200 meter freestyle (2:30.90). Freshman Natalie Obando (Chicopee, Mass.) logged second-place finishes in the 50 meter butterfly (36.76) and the 100 meter freestyle (1:13.12). Freshman Julianne Gordon (Plaistow, N.H.) took second in the 100 meter backstroke (1:30.72), while seniors Rebecca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.) grabbed second-place in the 200 meter IM (3:20.17) and Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) nabbed second in the 400 meter freestyle (5:50.06). Sophomore Desiree Milar (Springfield, Mass.) was third in the 50 meter butterfly (40.69), while sophomore Jacqueline Given (Arlington, Mass.) placed fourth in the 100 meter freestyle (1:19.70) and classmate Amanda Rotberg (Rowley, Mass.) recorded a trio of fifth-place finishes. The 200 meter freestyle relay team of Carrier, Milar, Obando, and Scianna won the event with a time of 2:08.45.

The Blazers will return to the pool when they host UMass-Dartmouth at Partyka Natatorium Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
