Softball Loses in Extra Innings to Anna Maria

PAXTON, Mass. - The Elms College Softball team traveled to Anna Maria College for a conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
Elms would try to create some offensive life early, following a stolen base by sophomore infielder/pitcher Jill Dykema (Preston, Conn), but Anna Maria would be the first to score, adding two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Blazers would have sophomore pitcher Kaelyn Zakitis (Amherst, Mass.) would pitch four and ⅔ innings, with two strikeouts. The AMCats would continue to add to their lead, adding three runs in the next three innings. Elms would continue their efforts to create offensive momentum, with hits from senior outfielder Kyla Cook (Taunton, Mass.) and senior infielder Danajah Stokes (Savannah, Ga,), but Anna Maria would score three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take Game 1, 8-0.

Game 2
The second game would see the Blazers on the board first, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. After a leadoff walk and a stolen base by sophomore Amanada Raymond (Auburn, Maine) and a single by Dykema, both runners would score after a ground out by Cook and a passed ball. Senior infielder Katie Cosmos (Wolcott, Conn.) would also hit a single in the inning. Dykema would take the ball for Elms, pitching seven and ⅔ innings, with six strikeouts. The two conference foes would show strong defensive showings, holding the other scoreless for an inning, but the AMCats would then take the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, 4-2. The Blazers would continue their efforts, by putting runners in scoring position, but in the top of the seventh they would tie the game after Cook would hit a two-run single to center field to drive in graduate student infielder Axia Lopez-Reyes (Salinas, P.R.) and Dykema. The game would continue to extra innings, but Anna Maria would score first to win the game 5-4.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Cook: two for six, with three runs batted-in.

  • Cosmos: one for five, with a walk.

  • Dykema: would pitch seven and ⅔ innings with six strikeouts, and would go 2 for six at the plate, with a double, two runs scored, a stolen base, and a walk.

  • Lopez-Reyes: 0 for two, with a run scored and a walk.

  • Raymond: 0 for five, with a run scored, a stolen base, and a walk.

  • Stokes: one for six.

  • Zakaitis: would pitch four and ⅔ innings with two strikeouts.

UP NEXT: The Elms Softball team will host Johnson & Wales University on Sunday, April 13th for a conference doubleheader at 12 & 2 pm at Cheryl R. Condon Field.
