Richard Hernandez Tabbed Head Coach of Cross Country Programs

Chicopee, MA – The Elms College Athletics Department is pleased to announce the hiring of Richard Hernandez (North Branford, CT) for the position of head coach for the Men's and Women's Cross Country programs.

"The entire Elms College Blazer Athletic Family is thrilled with the addition of Rich Hernandez as our new Cross Country Coach," said Athletic Director Dr. Michael Theulen. "His knowledge of the program and commitment to the ideals of our program will make him a huge success.  During his days as a STUDENT-athlete at Elms, Rich was the epitome of the term 'STUDENT-Athlete Leader.'  He worked tirelessly as captain of the Men's Cross Country Team in developing an incredible culture for both the men's and women's teams.  In addition, Rich was in attendance in supporting fellow Blazer STUDENT-athletes at nearly all of our home contests."

Theulen added, "his energy and spirit will help move the Cross Country Programs to the next level in all of our commitment areas- Academics, Athletics, and Leadership."

The men's team will look to improve on a 3rd place finish in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC), while the women look to continue their success after back to back NECC championships, under the guidance of Hernandez.

When asked about being named the next head coach of the cross country programs, Hernandez said, "Getting the opportunity to coach at my alma mater for a program I was recently a part of is truly special. The Elms XC program is a special program because of the kind, caring, and compassionate athletes that make it not only a team, but a family. I am honored to be part of the Elms Community in a new role as the head coach for the men's and women's cross country team. I am extremely thankful and appreciative for the opportunity presented to me by Athletic Director 'Coach T."
