Women’s Soccer Soars Past Newbury College, 3-0

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior midfielder Carmen Marino (Granby, Mass.) and sophomore midfielder Michelle Rossignol (Manchester, Conn.) each scored as the Blazers downed Newbury College 3-0 in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's soccer game at Leary Field.

With the win, Elms improves to 5-7-1 overall, 4-1-0 in NECC action, while Newbury moves to 2-7-0 on the season, 2-3-0 in league play.

Elms controlled the run of play throughout the entire contest, placing 19 shots on goal including five from Rossignol who put Elms ahead, 1-0 in the 35th minute of play when she received a pass from senior midfielder Christina Goodchild (Granby, Mass.) and fired a low line drive into the left corner of the net to give the Blazers a one goal lead at halftime.

Less than five minutes into the second half, Elms struck again when senior defender Ally Witaszek (Feeding Hills, Mass.) delivered a corner kick service that was initially cleared out by Newbury's defense but right to Marino who deposited the ball into the back of the net to set the score at 2-0.

Elms used a late own goal by the Nighthawks following a shot from freshman forward Rachel Connell (Easthampton, Mass.) that was saved by Newbury goalkeeper Elizabeth Fox (Orono, Maine) but played into the net by Nighthawks defender at the 80:14 mark to set the final score at 3-0.

Newbury had a string of opportunities as Amanda McKenzie (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Nicole Kaufman (Miami, Fla.) each played well in attack for the Nighthawks. The Blazers' defensive line of Witaszek, senior Ashley Venancio (Ludlow, Mass.), sophomore Lyndsey Oppenheimer (Easthampton, Mass.) and freshman Kathleen Tuechler (Farmingdale, N.Y.) helped keep Newbury off the scoreboard.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Rinaudo (Bellmore, N.Y.) earned her third straight shutout win of the season.

Fox was stellar between the pipes making 16 saves including three that she tipped over the crossbar.

Elms returns to conference action on Tuesday, October 15 at Bay Path College at 4:00 p.m.
