Welch Nets a Goal and an Assist to Help Women’s Soccer Down Becker College, 2-0

LEICESTER, Mass. – Elms College sophomore forward Melissa Welch (Westfield, Mass.) scored the Blazers' first goal of the contest and assisted on the second to help secure a 2-0 win over Becker College in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's soccer game at Alumni Field in Leicester, Mass.

With the win, Elms improves to 3-7-1 overall, 2-1-0 in NECC play, while Becker moves to 3-8-0 on the season, 2-1-0 in NECC action.

Elms controlled the run of play from start to finish, outshooting Becker, 22-4 in the contest.

Welch put the Blazers ahead, 1-0 in the 16th minute of action when she fired the ball into the lower right corner of the net.

Elms maintained its 1-0 edge into the second half and added to it in the 70th minute when freshman midfielder Kathleen Tuechler (Farmingdale, N.Y.) was on the receiving end of a Welch corner kick service and deposited the ball into the back of the net to set the score at 2-0.

Blazers' sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Rinaudo (Bellmore, N.Y.) needed just two saves against the Hawks to preserve her first shutout of the season, while Becker net-minder Katherine Cormier (San Diego, Calif.) was stellar despite the loss, turning aside 14 Elms shots.

Elms is back in action on Monday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m. when it hosts Mitchell College at Leary Field.
