Women's Volleyball Held Off By Westfield State, 3-1

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL HELD OFF BY WESTFIELD STATE, 3-1

CHICOPEE, MA, Sept. 16, 2008 - Elms College senior outside hitter Jeannette Nunez (Canovanas, Puerto Rico) hammered out a season-high 17 kills and added a match-high four aces, but Westfield State had three players registered 10 or more kills en route to a 3-1 (25-12, 25-21, 18-25, 25-13) win over the Blazers in Tuesday night's non-conference women's volleyball match at the Maguire Center.

Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Ryan (Westborough, MA) connected for a team-high 12 kills, freshman setter Alex Wahl (East Falmouth, MA) added 11 kills and 15 assists, and junior outside hitter Stephanie Bartkus (North Merrick, NY) had 10 kills for the Owls in the victory.

Westfield State (3-3) knocked down 14 kills and hit a sizzling .429 to easily take the first set 25-12 then held off a furious rally by the host Blazers to take the second set 25-21.

Elms College (0-9) battled to a 25-18 win in the third set behind Nunez' set-high six kills.

The Owls, however, held the Blazers to just four kills and a -.138 hitting percentage to claim the fourth and deciding set 25-13.

Junior setter Kim Phillips (Randolph, MA) handed out a match-high 24 assists for the Blazers in the losing effort.

Elms College returns to non-conference home action when it hosts Becker and Regis in a tri-match on Saturday, September 20 at the Maguire Center beginning at 10:00 a.m.
