WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SLIPS TO ST. JOSEPH, 3-2

CHICOPEE, MA, Oct. 9, 2008 - Elms College senior outside hitter Jeannette Nunez (Canovanas, Puerto Rico) hammered down a match and season-high 21 kills, but St. Joseph rallied from a two-set deficit to post a thrilling 3-2 (20-25, 15-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-8) win over the Blazers in Thursday night's non-conference women's volleyball match at the Maguire Center.

Junior outside hitter Catherine Irwin (Barkhamstead, CT) recorded a double-double with 20 kills and 13 digs. She also added four aces and hit .472 for the visiting Blue Jays, who won their second straight to improve to 5-10.

Elms College lost for just the second time in six matches as it fell to 5-12.

The Blazers cruised to 25-20 and 25-15 victories in the first two sets, but with the score tied at 23-23 in the third set, senior outside hitter Megan Gagne (Bristol, CT) delivered a pair of clutch kills in the final two points to help the Blue Jays stave off elimination.

St. Joseph then raced out to a 13-4 lead in the fourth set and never looked back en route to a 25-19 win that sent the match to a deciding set.

From there, the Blue Jays jumped out to a 11-2 lead before claiming the match with a 15-8 victory.

Sophomore middle hitter Brittany Souza (Newington, CT) scored 10 kills, added six digs and a match-high four block soles for the Blue Jays, who hit .277 and registered 14 aces.

Junior setter Kim Phillips (Randolph, MA) was sensational for the Blazers, as she delivered match-highs with 38 assists and six aces. Freshman outside hitter Stacy Croteau (Agawam, MA) added a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs in the losing effort.

Elms College returns to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play at Mitchell on Wednesday, October 15. Match time is 7:00 p.m.
