Women's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match With Becker, Regis

CHICOPEE, MA, Sept. 20, 2008 - Elms College senior outside hitter Jeannette Nunez (Canovanas, Puerto Rico) combined for 18 kills, but Regis College defeated both Elms College and Becker College to earn a sweep of Saturday's non-conference women's volleyball tri-match at the Maguire Center.

Regis defeated Becker 3-0 (25-19, 25-9, 25-17) and Elms College 3-0 (25-16, 25-5, 25-18). The Pride improved to 6-7 with the sweep.

The Blazers (1-10) earned their first win of the year with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-15) sweep over the Hawks (2-6) earlier in the day.

In the win over Becker, Nunez hammered down a match-high 13 kills, added eight digs and six assists. Junior libero Christie Sevigny (Chicopee, MA) scooped up a team-high 10 digs and junior setter Kim Phillips (Randolph, MA) handed out a match-high 25 assists.

Against Elms College, senior middle blocker Rachel Pinak (Cheektowaga, NY) had five kills and a match-high 19 digs for the Hawks, who committed 19 reception errors and hit -.048 as a team in that loss.

For Regis in its win over Elms College, senior outside hitter Ashley Paolini (Epping, NH) scored a match-high nine kills, while senior setter Samantha Reyes (Attleboro, MA), sophomore middle hitter Megan McCarty (Billerica, MA) and junior middle hitter Melissa Frederique (Manchester, NH) added two block solos apiece.

After winning the first set 25-16, the Pride scored the first 13 points of the second set and never looked back en route to a 25-5 victory. Regis then hit .400 (11-3-20) in the third set to complete the sweep with a 25-18 win.

Elms College opens New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play when it travels to Bay Path on Wednesday, September 24. Match time is 7:30 p.m.
