WOMEN'S SWIMMING SLIPS TO SAINT JOSEPH, 140-108
WEST HARTFORD, CT Feb. 7, 2008
- Elms College sophomore Dariana Diaz (Dorchester,
MA), freshman Ashley Arbo (Rocky Hill,
CT) and sophomore Alison McBride (East Providence,
RI) won three of the first four events, but Saint
Joseph College sophomore Sarah Wheeler (Winchendon Springs,
Mass.) set a pool-record in the 400-yard individual medley
to help pace the Blue Jays to a 140-108 in Saturday afternoon's
women's swimming meet at the Bruyette Natatorium.
Diaz won the 500-yard freestyle (6:40.45), Arbo followed with a
victory in the 200-yard backstroke (2:25.39) and McBride clocked a
first place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke (38.81) for the
Blazers, who concluded their 2008-09 dual-meet schedule 3-14.
Wheeler eclipsed the old school-record in the 400-IM by nearly
two seconds as she was clocked in 5:07.66, passing the old record
of 5:09.62 held by Juliette Byrnes which was set in 2005. Wheeler
completed the fly in 1:09.60 seconds before splitting a 1:20.29 for
the backstroke; she then swam the breast leg in 1:29.70, before
coming home in 1:08.07 for the free; Wheeler won the event while
SJC senior Carrie Hess (West Simsbury, Conn.) was
second in her final home meet.
The Blue Jays began the meet by winning the 200-free relay in
2:03.82 as sophomore Kristine Ellegard (Rocky Hill,
CT), senior Anne Weeks (Mystic, CT),
Wheeler, and first-year Mary Provencher (West Harford,
Conn.) swam the relay. First-year Michelle Di
Pinto (Burlington, CT) and sophomore Caitlin
Brault (Suffield, CT) then took second and fourth,
respectively in the 500-free.
Provencher and Ellegard grabbed second and third in the 200-back
with times of 2:33.70 and 2:39.64; Provencher's time hit the B
standard for the New England Championships. Wheeler grabbed first
in the 100-fly, hitting the A standard in the process with a time
of 1:04.96 while Weeks hit the A standard in the 50-free (27.02)
with the win and Provencher was a close second in 28.19.
SJC first-year diver Noelle Bellefluer (Bloomfield,
CT) won the diving competition with 125.40 points before
Weeks took another win, this time in the 100-free with a 1:01.01
clocking and Provencher followed with the victory in the 100-back
(1:11.55) and Di Pinto touched second in 1:18.31. Wheeler and Weeks
were not quite done as Wheeler won the 200-free (2:11.90) and Weeks
took the 100-IM in 1:11.61 on senior day.
Elms College concludes its season in the New England Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championship at UMass-Dartmouth on February 20-22.
