Women's Swimming Earns Split With Wheelock, Simmons

CHICOPEE, MA, Nov. 3, 2007 - Elms College sophomore Liz Walker (Holyoke, MA) won two events, but Simmons College received a pair of first place finishes each from senior Elizabeth Chan (Brookline, MA) and sophomore Brittany Torelli (Waterbury, CT) to help carry the Sharks to a sweep of Saturday's women's swimming double-dual meet at Partyka Natatorium.

Simmons (2-1) defeated Elms College 70-51 and Wheelock 75-46. Elms College (1-1) earned a split with its 69-53 victory over the Wildcats (1-2).

Walker clocked a new school-record time of 1:14.64 en route to her first place finish in the 100-meter butterfly, and also added a victory in the 200-meter individual medley (2:42.59).

For Simmons, Chan placed first in both the 50-meter freestyle (39.11) and 100-meter breaststroke (1:26.24), while Torelli posted winning times in both the 100-meter freestyle (1:06.14) and 50-meter freestyle (30.52).

In all, the Sharks posted first place finishes in seven of 12 individual events en route to its sweep of Saturday's meet.

Wheelock freshman Gabby Babin (Bangor, ME) placed first in the 200-meter freestyle (2:23.06) and also anchored the Wildcats' winning 200-meter freestyle relay team that included freshman Courtney Burkart, junior Chelsea Gibbons (South Dennis, MA) and freshman Brooke Walsh (Acushnet, MA).

Elms College sophomore Marie Waterhouse (East Longmeadow, MA) won the 100-meter  individual medley (1:16.79) and also teamed with junior Kate Orefice (Southington, CT), senior Kaity Jo Bryll (East Hartland, CT) and freshman Theresa Pitassi (Naugatuck, CT) to win the 200-meter medley relay (2:18.57).

The Blazers return to dual-meet action when they host Western Connecticut State on Friday, November 9. Meet time is 6:00 p.m. at Partyka Natatorium.
