NORTHAMPTON, MA, Sept. 13, 2008 - Elms College freshman goalkeeper Kelly Callahan (Monson, MA) stopped seven shots, but Smith College junior defender Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA) scored her first goal of the season today in what proved to be the game winner for the Pioneers in a 1-0 victory over the Blazers in Saturday's non-conference women's soccer game at Smith.

With the victory, the Pioneers improved to 1-3 overall while Elms College fell to 0-4 on the season.

In an evenly played contest, Grover-Silva scored the eventual game-winner 25 minutes into the first half when she found the lower left corner of the net from the top of the penalty area.

The Pioneers had golden opportunities to add to the lead, but hit the crossbar in both the 46th and 87th minutes.

Elms College had several scoring opportunities of its own, but Smith senior goalkeeper Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, OH) also finished with seven saves in the shutout effort.

Saturday's loss was Elms College's third one-goal setback in the first four games of the season that includes a pair of overtime losses.

The Blazers return to non-conference play when they host Westfield State on Tuesday, September 16. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
