WOMEN'S LACROSSE SHUTOUT BY WESTFIELD STATE, 17-0

CHICOPEE, MA, April 18, 2009 - Westfield State sophomore midfielder Rachel Dionne (Feeding Hills, MA) netted a game-high five goals and sophomore attack Laura Chiricosta (Lexington, MA) added a pair of goals and three assists as the Owls soared to a 17-0 win over Elms College in Saturday's New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) game at Leary Field.

Westfield State (10-4) snapped a two-game losing skid and posted its first 10-win season in just the program's second intercollegiate season. With the win, the Owls also remained in third place in the NEWLA standings.

Elms College fell to 0-12, 0-6 NEWLA.

Chiricosta and Dionne each tallied twice in the game's opening 3:31 as the Owls raced out to a quick 6-0 advantage.

From there, freshman attack Nicole Dipilato (Shrewsbury, MA) struck for all three of her goals of the final 12:19 of the first half to help Westfield State build a 12-0 lead at intermission.

The Owls outshot the Blazers 22-0 in the opening 30 minutes and limited the hosts to just one second half shot.

Westfield State returns to non-conference play when it hosts Framingham State on Tuesday, April 21 at 7:00 p.m. Elms College next plays on Monday, April 20 at St. Joseph (CT). Game time is 4:00 p.m.
