WOMEN'S LACROSSE DOWNED BY BECKER, 26-9
CHICOPEE, MA, April 4, 2009 - Becker College sophomore midfielder Tammy Mullen (Pottstown, PA) netted a game-high 10 goals, including the 100th of her collegiate career, and the Hawks scored eight unanswered goals midway through the first half to pull away to a 26-9 win over Elms College in Saturday's New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) game at Leary Field.
The Hawks snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 4-5 overall, 1-2 NEWLA. Elms College remained winless at 0-7, 0-3 NEWLA.
Mullen, who now has a NEWLA-leading 57 goals on the year, scored a pair of goals in the game's opening 3:35 - the 99th and 100th of her career - as Becker raced out to quick 4-0 advantage.
The Blazers pecked away at the Hawks' lead with four unanswered goals that included a pair of tallies by sophomore attack Jenn Lough (Feeding Hills, MA) and single goals by sophomore midfielder Melissa Meon (South Hadley, MA) and freshman midfielder Emily Walsh (Hadley, MA) to knot the game at 4-4.
From there, however, Mullen and freshman attack Nicole Lijana (Moorestown, NJ) took over for the Hawks, as the two each scored three goals, and freshman midfielder Morgan Hazen (Woodstock, VT) tallied twice to extend the Hawks lead to 12-4 with 10:00 remaining in the first half.
Becker, which led 15-6 at intermission, scored seven more unanswered goals midway through the second half to put the game out of reach.
Lough poured in a season-high seven goals for the Blazers, who also received a solid 12-save effort from freshman goalkeeper Holly Braziel (Shelburne Falls, MA).
Lijana finished with six goals and a game-high six assists, Hazen finished with four goals and four assists, and Mullen added three assists.
The Hawks held advantages in both shots (47-20) and draw controls (24-11).
Elms College returns to NEWLA play at Fitchburg State on Tuesday, April 7. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
