Women's Lacrosse Narrowly Nipped At Thomas

WOMEN'S LACROSSE NARROWLY NIPPED AT THOMAS, 8-7

WATERVILLE, ME, April 9, 2009  - Elms College sophomore attack Jenn Lough (Feeding Hills, MA) netted a team-high four goals, but Thomas College scored two late goals then held off one final rally to earn an 8-7 win over the visiting Blazers in Thursday's New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) game at Alumni Field.

The Terriers are now 1-6 overall (1-4 NEWLA), while the Blazers drop to 0-9 (0-5 NEWLA) on the season.

With the game tied at 6-6, freshman attack Lisa Aron (Upton, ME) scored on an assist from freshman midfielder Heather Holmes (Wareham, MA) at the 11:14 mark. Denby would then add her fifth goal for the Terriers on a free position attempt with 8:02 to play to push the Terriers advantage to 8-6.

Freshman midfielder Emily Walsh (Hadley, MA) scored in the closing seconds, but the Blazers ran out of time as the Terriers hung on for their first win of the 2009 season.

Lough scored the first goal of the game just 51 seconds in to give the Blazers a quick 1-0 lead. Thomas would respond with four unanswered goals, including three by Denby and another by sophomore attack Kristalyn Kidd (Plainfield, CT) to give the Terriers a 4-1 halftime lead.

Lough would tally her second goal of the contest just 19 seconds in the second half before Thomas freshman attack Tanya Berry (South Paris, ME) responded 40 seconds later.

Elms College freshman attack Katlyn Harrington (East Longmeadow, MA) and Denby would trade goals in the next several minutes to extend Thomas' lead to 6-3 with 17:50 to play.

Harrington netted her second of the game and Lough added two more to help the Blazers knot the game at 6-6 before the Terriers tallied twice in the final 10 minutes to secure the victory.

Elms College concludes its Maine road trip at Husson University on Friday, April 10. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
