CHICOPEE, MA, Jan. 15, 2009 - Elms College junior forward Amanda Brogna (Oxford, MA) poured in a game-high 19 points and hauled in 20 rebounds as one of three players to register double-doubles in the Blazers' 73-59 win over Newbury in Thursday night's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's basketball game at the Maguire Center.

Elms College (4-8 overall, 2-1 NECC) won for the third time in four games, while Newbury remained winless at 0-10, 0-2 NECC.

Junior forward Erin Hutchinson (Groton, MA) netted a collegiate career-high 15 points and added 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the year, while senior forward Paige Schneider (Windsor, CT) added her second straight double-double with a season-high 15-point, 11-rebound effort.

Brogna dropped in six of her points in the opening 7:14 to help key a game-opening 18-2 run by the Blazers.

Newbury responded with a 13-4 run over the next 4:34 to cut the deficit to 22-15.

Elms College then answered with a 16-6 run over the final 8:12 of the half to build what proved to be an insurmountable 38-21 lead at intermission.

The Blazers, who led by as many as 27 with 13:40 remaining, held a huge advantage in rebounds (62-35), including 25-7 on the offensive end.

Junior guard Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA) scored a team-high 16 points, freshman guard Morganna Machado (Attleboro, MA) finished with 13 points and freshman guard Kendra Bannister (Stafford, VA) added 11 points as the three players to finish in double figures for the Nighthawks.

Newbury was limited to 22.9-percent shooting in the first half (8 for 35) and finished 10 of 29 from 3-point range for the game.

Elms College returns to NECC play on Saturday, January 17 at Southern Vermont. Tip-off is 1:00 p.m.
