New London, CT, Jan. 29, 2009 - Junior forward Amanda Brogna (Oxford, MA) scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Elms College women's basketball team to a 77-47 victory at Mitchell College Thursday night in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) contest.

The Blazers improved to 8-9 overall and 6-2 in the NECC, while the Mariners dropped to 6-9 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

Elms College never trailed in the game after opening the contest with a 13-2 run over the 6:11 of the game and took a 34-16 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Blazers led by as many as 37 n the second half after freshman guard Brooke Miller (West Warwick, RI) knocked down a free throw with 1:51 to go in the game.

Senior forward Paige Schneider (Windsor, CT) and junior forward Erin Hutchinson (Groton, MA) also recorded double-doubles for Elms. Schneider poured in 14 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, while Hutchinson scored 15 points and grabbed 10 boards. Freshman guard Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham, MA) also scored 15 points to go with four assists and three rebounds.

Mitchell was led by junior guard Jen Iglesias (Waterbury, CT), who scored a game-high 23 points with five assists and three rebounds. Freshman center Destiny Harris (Bristol, CT) fell just short of a double-double with nine points and 10 boards.

The Blazers shot 49.1-percent (28 for 57) from the field and were 19-28 (67.9-percent) from the free throw line, while the Mariners shot just 22.1 percent (17 for 77) from the floor and were 10 for 19 (52.6-percent) from the charity stripe.

Elms College will return to action Saturday when it hosts Daniel Webster in a NECC contest. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
