LEICESTER, MA, Jan. 10, 2009 - Elms College junior forward Amanda Brogna (Oxford, MA) registered a double-double with a team-high 23 points and 12 rebounds, but Becker junior guard Shannon Tibbetts (Warren, MA) poured in a game-high 27 points to help the host Hawks hold off the Blazers 70-64 in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's basketball opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.

Elms College (2-8, 0-1 NECC) fell for the third time in four games, while Becker won its fourth straight and improved to 5-4, 1-0 NECC.

Brogna went 10 of 19 from the field in 37 minutes en route to her fourth double-double of the season and fourth career 20-plus point effort.

Senior forward Paige Schneider (Windsor, CT) dropped in a season-high 14 points and hauled in seven rebounds, while freshman guard Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham, MA) and junior guard Jess Jurkowski (Belchertown, MA) added eight points apiece.

A three-pointer by freshman guard Christina Korney (Feeding Hills, MA) with 14 seconds remaining pulled the Blazers to within 67-64, but Tibbetts connected on a pair of free throws with six seconds left to seal the victory.

Elms College returns to NECC play at Wheelock on Tuesday, January 13. Tip-off is 7:00 p.m.
