Box score

CHICOPEE, MA, Feb. 1, 2008 - Elms College senior guard Michelle Fernandes (Danbury, CT) and sophomore guard Ally Wanat (West Springfield, MA) dropped in 13 points apiece, but Maine Maritime Academy used a key late first half run and had 12 players score en route to a 62-51 win over the Blazers in Friday night's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's basketball game at the Maguire Center.

Maine Maritime won its fifth straight game to improve to 11-7 overall, 6-1 NAC. Elms College fell to 6-12, 3-5 NAC.

The Blazers trailed just 27-20 following a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Annie Dunnack (Mansfield Center, CT) with 47 seconds remaining in the first half.

Freshman forward Ashley Tilton (Lubec, ME), however, responded 15 seconds later with a rare 4-point play, as she drained a 3-pointer and ensuing free throw after being fouled from the top of the arc to extend the Mariners' lead to 31-20.

Following a layup by Wanat that cut the Blazers' deficit to 31-22, freshman forward Tatum Welch (Newport, ME) hauled in an offensive rebound off a missed 3-pointer and deposited a layup as time expired to give Maine Maritime a 33-22 halftime lead.

The Mariners then opened the second half with a 9-1 run over the first 5:17 to eventually put the game out of reach.

Welch registered the game's only double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Tilton finished with 10 points for the Mariners, whose bench players outscored the Blazers' bench 31-6 in the victory.

Junior forward Paige Schneider (Windsor, CT) added 10 points, while Dunnack finished with nine points and a game-high four assists.

Elms College returns to conference play when it hosts Husson College on Saturday, February 2. Tip-off at the Maguire Center is set for 2:00 p.m.
