Blazers earn first win over the Spartans since 1990-91 season

CHICOPEE, MA, Jan. 12, 2008 - Elms College sophomore forward Amanda Brogna (Oxford, MA) and freshman guard Justine Tokas (Enfield, CT) combined for 26 points and the Blazers posted their first win over Castleton State College in 16 years with a 61-45 victory over the Spartans in Saturday's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's basketball game at the Maguire Center.

The Blazers, whose last win over the Spartans came during the 1990-91 season, snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 5-6 overall, 2-1 NAC. Castleton fell to 6-6, 2-1 NAC.

Brogna finished with a game-high 15 points and nine rebounds, including 10 points in the first half, while Tokas added nine of her 11 points in the second half to help spark the Blazers.

Elms College led by as many as 15 points with 8:14 remaining in the first half and led 29-20 at intermission.

The Blazers then sealed the victory by shooting 61.1-percent (11 of 18) while limiting the Spartans to just six second half field goals. For the game, Castleton shot just 27.7-percent from the field, including 22.2-percent (6 of 27) from 3-point range.

Elms College held decisive advantages in both points in the paint (30-10) and bench scoring (24-12).

Junior guard Jess Banks (Milford, CT) scored 10 points and added eight rebounds for Castleton in the loss.

Elms College returns to non-conference play on Thursday, January 17 at WNEC. Game time is 7:00 p.m. Castleton next plays on Friday, January 18 when it hosts conference foe Thomas. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m.
