WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO CASTLETON, 83-57

CHICOPEE, MA, Feb. 2, 2007 - Elms College sophomore forward Paige Schneider (Windsor, CT) netted a game-high 14 points, but Castleton State College used a balanced offensive attack to pull away to an 83-57 win over the Blazers in Friday night's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's basketball game at the Maguire Center.

Sophomore guard LeeAnne Ketchen (Brookline, NH) scored 14 points for the Spartans, who had a total of six players reach double figures in the victory.

Castleton (12-6 overall, 9-3 NAC) extended its winning streak to four straight games and remained atop the NAC West Division standings.

Elms College lost its second straight game and fell to 6-12 overall, 4-7 NAC.

The Spartans scored the game's first 10 points and roared out to a 27-6 lead in the opening 10 minutes.

Senior forward Jenn Goff (Granville, NY) netted 10 of her 12 points in the first half and the Spartans shot a sizzling 65.5-percent from the field to build a 51-21 lead at intermission.

Sophomore guard Mary Nienow (Middlebury, VT) dropped in nine points in the first half - all on 3-pointers, while Goff and sophomore forward Melissa Verrill (Hiram, ME) combined to go 4 for 4 from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes for Castleton, which shot 50-percent from 3-point range in the first half.

Sophomore guard Jess Banks (Milford, CT) and Goff each finished with 12 points, Verrill and Nienow each tallied 11 points and senior guard Carley Amedore (Schnectady, NY) added 10 points to all reach double figures for the Spartans in the victory.

Freshman guard Ally Wanat (West Springfield, MA) added nine points and a game-high five assists for the Blazers in the losing effort.

Elms College returns to NAC play when it hosts Johnson State College on Saturday, February 3. Tip-off is 3:00 p.m.
