IN SIX-INNING MERCY-RULE GAME

CHICOPEE, MA, April 16, 2009 - Sophomore  left fielder Mallory Householder (Ellington, CT) went 3 for 4 and Western New England College used a six-run, sixth inning to pull away to an 8-0 six-inning, mercy-rule victory over Elms College in Thursday's non-conference softball game at Condon Field.

The Golden Bears won their third six-inning, mercy-rule game in 24 hours to improve to 18-7, while the Blazers fell to 11-11.

With WNEC leading 2-0 in the sixth, senior shortstop Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT) smacked a RBI single up the middle and freshman designated player Sarah Lempicki (Southington, CT) then hammered a two-run double deep off the center field fence to push the Golden Bears' advantage to 5-0.

Two batters later, DeGennaro plated WNEC's fourth run of the inning, Lempicki would score when junior right fielder Christina Farese (Marlborough, MA) reached on a fielders' choice. Farese would later score on an infield error - the Blazers' fourth of the contest - for the 8-0 final.

Senior Laura Bower (Hudson, MA), junior Vic Lospinuso (West Islip, NY) and Lempicki combined on a six-hit, shutout. Bower struck out four and allowed three hits in the first three innings to run her record to 7-4 on the season.

Sophomore pitcher Ani Ramsdell (Gardner, MA) gave up seven earned runs on 13 hits to fall to 5-7 on the year, while freshman first baseman Courtney Hampton (Westfield, MA) went 2 for 2 for the Blazers in the loss.

Elms College returns to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play when it hosts second place Bay Path in a crucial conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 18. Game one is set for 12:00 p.m.
