Softball Falls To RPI, 10-1 In Six Innings

 SOFTBALL FALLS TO RPI, 10-1 IN SIX INNINGS

CHICOPEE, MA, April 24, 2009 - RPI sophomore pitcher Felicia Bua (Gilford, NH) threw six innings only allowing one run on two hits while striking out seven in a 10-1 six inning mercy-rule win over Elms College in Friday's non-conference softball game at Condon Field.

In the fifth inning of a scoreless game, RPI loaded the bases with two outs for sophomore shortstop Alysa Rochminski (Schenectady, NY),who drew a walk to plate the game's first run. 

Sophomore designated player Jessica Sitzer (Rockaway, NJ) would also draw a walk to put the Red Hawks up 2-0.

The Blazers responded in their half of the inning with a one run, two-out rally.  Freshman third baseman Kelly Callahan (Monson, MA) doubled for Elms College's first hit of the game.  Freshman pinch hitter Alicia Campbell (Stockbridge, MA) drove in the Blazers' lone run of the game with a single up the middle.

RPI began the top of the sixth inning with consecutive base hits which lead to a two RBI double by freshman catcher Sarah Heller (Guilderland, NY). With RPI leading 4-1, senior left fielder Julianne Bass (Costa Mesa, CA) hit a double down the right field line to run the Red Hawks' lead to 6-1. 

The Red Hawks would plate four more in the frame including a two RBI single by senior centerfielder Sara Finkbeiner (Ellenville, NY) and a RBI double by junior second baseman Becky Bailey (Rome, NY) for the 10-1 final. 

In the loss for Elms College, sophomore pitcher Andrea Ramsdell (Gardner, MA) did not allow a run in the first four innings.  Ramsdell was able to escape a bases-loaded jam in the second inning to keep the game scoreless.

With the win, RPI improves to 21-6, while Elms College drops to 15-12.

The Blazers return to action Sunday as they host Southern Vermont in a late-season NECC doubleheader.  The first game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
