Softball Falls To Wheaton, Olivet In First Day Of Cusic Classic

FORT MYER, FL, March 7, 2009 - Senior shortstop Kerrie Bowden (Chicopee, MA) went a combined 3 for 6, but the Blazers fell 7-2 to Wheaton and 17-1 in five innings to Olivet (MI) in the first day of the Gene Cusic Classic at Fort Myers, Florida.

In the loss to Wheaton (1-0), freshman right fielder Marlene DiRaimo (Cranston, RI) delivered a RBI single in the third inning for the Blazers' lone run, but Wheaton used a five-run, third-inning to pull away.

Against Olivet, Bowden went 2 for 2 and scored the Blazers' lone run on a RBI sacrifice bunt by freshman pitcher Courtney Hampton (Westfield, MA).

Olivet (1-0) pounded out 18 hits and capitalized on five Elms College (0-2) errors to post the five-inning, mercy-rule victory.

The Blazers return to action at the Cusic Classic on Sunday, March 8 against the College of Wooster (9:00 a.m.) and WPI (1:00 p.m.)
