Callahan Named NECC Rookie Of The Week

CALLAHAN NAMED NECC SOFTBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

ATTLEBORO, MA, April 14, 2009 - Elms College softball freshman third baseman Kelly Callahan (Monson, MA) was named New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Rookie of the Week on Tuesday afternoon.

Callahan earned her first-ever NECC honor after going a combined 4 for 6 with a pair of RBI and three runs scored in the Blazers' conference home doubleheader sweep over Newbury last Friday.

In Monday's thrilling 3-2 eight-inning, non-conference win over Smith, Callahan converted a clutch, game-saving double play.

With the bases loaded and no outs, Callahan dove to make a brilliant snag of a screaming line drive down the third base line by Hiltzik. Callahan then tagged third to complete the heads-up, double play. The Blazers, who trailed 2-0 heading into their final at-bat, tied the game with two outs in the seventh, then went on to win the game with a run in the eighth.

For the season, Callahan is batting .339 with four doubles and nine RBI while committing just four errors and fielding the ball at a .922 clip in 18 starts at third.
