Softball Splits NAC Doubleheader With Castleton

CHICOPEE, MA.  April 27, 2008 - Elms college sophomore catcher Tiffany Williams (Berlin, CT) went 3 for 7 with three RBI and two runs scored in two games to help the Blazers earn a split against Castleton in Sunday afternoon's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) softball doubleheader at Condon Field.

Elms College posted a 2-1 victory in game one, but Castleton rebounded to win game two 7-5.  Elms College finished the regular season 19-14, 12-8 NAC, and Castleton stands at a mark of 12-22, 10-10 NAC.

Elms College jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the first inning of game one when Williams blasted a solo homerun over the left field fence.

Clinging to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, Elms College sophomore left fielder Kim Lastowski (Turners Falls, MA) stroked a single to left field.  Following Lastowski, sophomore third baseman Allyson Graffum (Ipswich, MA) roped a double down the right field line.  The next batter, senior pitcher Tammie Tremblay, (Springfield, MA) converted a sacrifice squeeze bunt to score the eventual game winning tally.

In game one, Tremblay surrendered just five hits and one earned run to post the complete-game victory.

In game two, the Blazers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI double by Williams, a RBI single by Lastowski, and a RBI sacrifice groundout by Graffum.

Castleton posted single tallies in both the second and third innings to cut the Elms College lead to 3-2.

In the fifth inning, the Spartans struck for three runs on four hits to gain a 5-3 advantage.

In the seventh inning, Castleton right fielder Laura Emilo (Middlebury, VT) crushed a two-run double to left center to extend the Spartan lead to 7-3.

In bottom of the seventh inning, Elms College senior shortstop Karyn Palomba (Enfield, CT) recorded a sacrifice RBI groundout and Williams hit an infield single to score junior second baseman Kerrie Bowden, (Chicopee, MA).

Castleton freshman pitcher Tosha Whittemore (Bridgeport, VT) scattered nine hits and allowed three earned runs to secure the split.
