Softball Sweeps Becker In NAC Doubleheader

LEICESTER, MA, April 13, 2008 - Junior center fielder Danielle LaPlante (Randolph, VT) and sophomore catcher Tiffany Williams (Berlin, CT) each blasted two-run home runs to help the Blazers complete a sweep of Sunday's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) softball doubleheader at Becker College with 9-1 and 16-0 five-inning, mercy-rule victories.

With the sweep, the Blazers extended their win streak to four straight and improved to 11-8 overall, 4-2 NAC. Becker fell to 4-11, 1-9 NAC.

In game one, the Blazers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first on RBI singles by Williams, senior first baseman Christina Giampetruzzi (Westfield, MA) and sophomore third baseman Allyson Graffum (Ipswich, MA).

With the Blazers leading 3-1 in the fourth, junior second baseman Kerrie Bowden (Chicopee, MA) belted a RBI double to score LaPlante.

Elms College then sealed the mercy-rule win with a five-run, fifth inning that included RBI singles by Graffum and freshman right fielder Alison McBride (East Providence, RI), and LaPlante's first collegiate career-high home run.

Senior pitcher Tammie Tremblay (Springfield, MA) allowed just three hits, one earned run and struck out six to post her seventh win of the season.

In game two, the Blazers exploded for 14 runs on 13 hits in the top of the second inning, highlighted by Williams' two-run homer, a three-run triple by senior shortstop Karyn Palomba (Enfield, CT) and back-to-back RBI doubles by LaPlante and Bowden.

From there freshman pitcher Andrea Ramsdell (Gardner, MA) and Destinee Meeker (Bantam, CT) combined on a two-hit shutout. Ramsdell threw 4.0 innings and struck out four to improve her record to 4-2 with a team-leading 1.02 ERA.

Giampetruzzi went a combined 5 for 7 with a pair of doubles and two RBI, Williams went 5 for 8 with a homer and five RBI.

Bowden, who extended her hitting streak to 13 straight games, went a combined 5 for 9 with a pair of doubles and three RBI in the two victories on Sunday.

Elms College returns to conference play when it hosts Lesley University in a doubleheader at Dooley Field. Game one is set for 3:00 p.m.
