SOFTBALL SWEPT BY WNEC IN DOUBLEHEADER

Box scores

CHICOPEE, MA, March 30, 2007 - Elms College junior first baseman Christina Giampetruzzi (Westfield, MA) went a combined 3 for 5, but Western New England College sophomore pitcher Laura Bower (Hudson, MA) fired a complete-game, three-hitter in game one and senior first baseman Jessica Nelson (South Hadley, MA) blasted a solo home run in game two to help lift the Golden Bears to a pair of 1-0 victories over the Blazers in Friday afternoon's non-conference softball doubleheader at Dooley Field.

WNEC, which posted a pair of wins over Framingham State on Thursday, extended its winning streak to four games to improve to 6-6 overall. Elms College fell to 1-6 overall.

In game one, WNEC junior second baseman Stephanie Ganser (Fairfield, CT) delivered a RBI single to left field in the third inning to plate sophomore third baseman Amanda Aceto (South Portland, ME) with what proved to be the game-winning run.

Bower was dominant for the Golden Bears, as she struck out 10, walked one and allowed just three hits en route to her third win of the year.

In game two, the Blazers threatened to break a scoreless tie when they loaded the bases in the sixth inning. WNEC sophomore pitcher Brittany DeGennaro (Orange, CT), however, forced an inning-ending double play to preserve the deadlock.

Nelson then responded in the top of the seventh with a homer to deep center field - her third of the year - to help seal the Golden Bears' doubleheader sweep.

DeGennaro allowed just one hit in two innings of relief to earn her third win of the year. Junior pitcher Alex Paterson (Deep River, CT) yielded just two hits and struck out four over the first five innings in a no-decision.

The Blazers received solid pitching efforts from junior Tammie Tremblay (Springfield, MA) and freshman Alyssa Skewes (Ellington, CT).

Tremblay allowed one run on four hits and struck out three in a complete-game effort in game one, while Skewes allowed four hits and struck out six in her complete-game effort in the nightcap.

Elms College returns to non-conference play on Monday, April 2 when it hosts Smith College. Game time is 4:00 p.m. at Dooley Field.
