Softball Sweeps Past Becker In NAC Doubleheader

CHICOPEE, MA, April 21, 2007 - Elms College junior first baseman Christina Giampetruzzi (Westfield, MA) went a combined 5 for 7 with five RBI and the Blazers received complete-game victories from pitchers Tammie Tremblay (Springfield, MA) and Alyssa Skewes (Ellington, CT) en route to a sweep over Becker College in Saturday afternoon's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) softball doubleheader at Dooley Field.

Elms College won both games via five-inning, mercy-rule, as it posted victories of 16-3 and 15-1 over visiting Becker.

The Blazers snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 9-10 overall, 7-3 NAC. The Hawks' losing streak was extended to eight straight as they fell to 2-13 overall, 1-8 NAC.

Giampetruzzi, who has batted .600 (12 for 20) and registered 11 RBI over the Blazers last six games, belted out a pair of doubles in each of Saturday's victories.

In game one, Giampetruzzi belted a RBI double and two-run single as part of a 10-run first inning for the Blazers, who added three more runs in the second and fourth innings.

Tremblay struck out four and yielded three earned runs on six hits to post her fourth victory of the year.

In game two, junior second baseman Karyn Palomba (Enfield, CT) went 3 for 3 with a collegiate career-high six RBI, including two-run singles in both the first and second innings. She added a RBI sacrifice fly in the third and drove in her sixth run of the game with a RBI single in the fourth.

Skewes cruised to her fifth win of the year, as she struck out six and allowed no earned runs and just one hit.

Tremblay finished 4 for 5 with four RBI, including a 2 for 2 effort with three RBI in game one.

Elms College returns to NAC West Division play with a doubleheader at Bay Path College on Wednesday afternoon. Game one is set for 3:00 p.m.
