Men's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match With Baruch, Daniel Webster

CHICOPEE, MA, March 21, 2009 - Baruch College sophomore outside hitter Pablo Oliveira (Uberlandia, Brazil) pounded out a combined 28 kills and junior setter Radu Wyrwas (Bialystok, Poland) handed out 71 assists to lead the Bearcats a sweep of Saturday's men's volleyball tri-match hosted by Elms College at the Maguire Center.

The Bearcats (30-9), who extended their win streak to eight straight matches, defeated Daniel Webster 3-0 (30-13, 30-22, 30-14) and Elms College 3-1 (30-26, 25-30, 30-23, 30-27).

Elms College earned a split of its two matches with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-13, 30-20) win over Daniel Webster.

Elms College (15-12) had its six-match win streak snapped, but still remained in second place in the latest North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England Division standings at 10-3.

Daniel Webster (3-12, 2-10 NECVA New England), which restarted its men's volleyball program this season after an 11-year hiatus, lost for the ninth straight time.

In Baruch's win over Daniel Webster, Oliveira banged out 10 kills, and freshman middle blocker Matt McKee (Bay Shore, NY) added nine kills and hit .538 for the Bearcats, who also piled up 12 total kills and hit .323 for the match, including .500 (20-5-30) in the opening set.

Against Elms College, Oliveira and senior opposite Danial Levent (Forest Hills, NY) hammered down 18 kills apiece, as the Bearcats hit .352 for the match, including .600 (19-1-30) in the third set.

Freshman outside hitter Sequiel Sanchez Velez (San Sebastian, Puerto Rico) was sensational for the Blazers, as he finished with a combined 45 kills in the two matches - most of any player on the day. Against Baruch, Sanchez Velez pounded down a match-high 27 kills.

Sophomore setter Ivan Andujar (Carolina, Puerto Rico) had a combined 62 assists and freshman setter Jesus Echevarria (San Juan, Puerto Rico) added 49 assists, including 32 in the Blazers' loss to Baruch.

Daniel Webster freshman outside hitter Chris Shannon (Ronkonkoma, NY) was solid, as he added a team-high nine kills apiece in both of the Eagles' losses, while junior setter Eric Smith (Clay, NY) handed out 40 assists, including 24 against Elms College.

Elms College concludes its NECVA New England Division regular season schedule at Wentworth on Tuesday, March 24. Match time is 7:00 p.m.
