Men's Volleyball Eliminated In NECVA Tournament First Round

CAMBRIDGE, MA, April 3, 2009 - Freshman outside hitter Sequiel Sanchez Velez (San Sebastian, Puerto Rico) delivered a match-high 18 kills, but senior outside hitter Shane Donohue (Freehold, NJ) also knocked down a match-high 18 kills as No. 3 Ramapo hit .380 en route to a 3-1 (30-15, 28-30, 30-18, 30-25) win over the 14th-seeded Blazers in the first round of the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Tournament on Friday afternoon at DuPont Gymnasium on the campus of MIT.

With the loss, Elms College (19-13) is eliminated from the NECVA Tournament in the first round for the second straight year, while Ramapo (24-6) advanced to Saturday's semifinal round to face the winner of the MIT/Vassar match.

The Roadrunners were nearly unstoppable in the opening set, as they hit a scorching .833 (16-1-18).

The Blazers responded defensively in the second set by limiting Ramapo to just .176 hitting to even the match at one-set apiece following a 30-25 win.

The Roadrunners answered by hitting .429 in the third set and won 30-18, as the Blazers had just nine kills in the set and hit -.037.

From there, Ramapo hit .296 in the fourth set to secure the victory.

Sophomore outside hitter Carlos DeLeon-Gomez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) knocked down 10 kills as the only Elms College player to reach double figures, while junior setter Ivan Andujar (Carolina, Puerto Rico) and freshman setter Jesus Echevarria (San Juan, Puerto Rico) combined for 43 assists.

The Blazers were also plagued by 11 service errors and 10 reception errors in the loss.
