JERSEY CITY, NJ, Feb. 9, 2008 - Elms College men's volleyball freshman outside hitter Alberto Bravo (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) knocked down a combined 47 kills in two matches and the Blazers posted a fifth place finish in the 2008 Gothic Knight Invitational  at New Jersey City University on Saturday at the Moore Athletic Center.

The Blazers (6-5) were defeated by both Medaille 3-2 (25-30, 30-22, 30-28, 21-30, 15-13) and Newbury 3-0 (32-30, 30-26, 30-26) in Pool A first round action.

Elms College then posted a 3-0 (30-12, 30-19, 30-26) victory over Southern Vermont in the fifth place match.

In the loss to Medaille, Bravo knocked down a match-high 24 kills, sophomore setter Ivan Andujar (Carolina, Puerto Rico) handed out 55 assists, freshman outside hitter Carlos DeLeon-Gomez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) recorded 16 kills and 12 digs, and junior outside hitter Marc Carrasco (Tucson, AZ) added 11 kills and 10 digs.

In the loss to Newbury, Bravo blasted a match-high 23 kills, Andujar registered 47 assists, and DeLeon-Gomez added 10 kills and a match-high 13 digs.

In the fifth place victory over Southern Vermont, freshman middle blocker Curt Despard (Enfield, CT) knocked down a collegiate career-high 16 kills, Carrasco recorded a match-high 10 digs and DeLeon-Gomez had five kills and a match-high 16 assists.

Elms College returns to non-conference play when it hosts Mount Ida on Tuesday, February 12. Match time at the Maguire Center is 7:00 p.m.
