Walker Becomes First Elms College Women's Swimmer To Win NEISDA Championship

SWIM TEAMS COMPETE AT NEISDA CHAMPIONSHIP 

DURHAM, NH, Feb. 17, 2007 - Elms College freshman Liz Walker (Holyoke, MA) was named New England Champion for her first place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke as the men and women's swimming teams competed at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships on Saturday at Swasey Pool.

After day two of the championship meet, the women are in eighth place overall.

For the women, Walker's winning time of 1:08.75 in the 100-yard breaststroke made history, as she became the first Elms College women's swimmer to earn a NEISDA individual title.

Walker also teamed with sophomore Kate Orefice (Southington, CT), junior Kaity Jo Bryll (East Hartland, CT) and freshman Marie Waterhouse (East Longmeadow, MA) to set a school record in the 200-yard medley relay, recording a time of 1:57.42 and a fourth place finish.

Orefice earned a fifth place overall finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:13.42 and set a school record in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 28.93 and eighth place finish.

Waterhouse also earned a fourth place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.69.

For the men, freshman Jason DiMauro (New Hartford, CT) laced third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:37.39.

DiMauro teamed with freshman Mike Starke (Chicopee, MA), freshman Mark Pirruccio (Brewster, MA) and senior Ted Manley (Monson, MA) in the 200-yard medley relay which recorded a school record time of 1:50.91 and finished 11th overall.

Pirruccio finished seventh overall in the 50-yard butterfly, recording a time of 25.58.

The Blazers return to Swasey Pool on Sunday, February 18 for the final day of the NEISDA Championships. Trials begin at 9:00 a.m. with finals set for 5:00 p.m.
