Box score

WESTFIELD, MA, Sept. 23, 2008 - Westfield State freshmen forwards Justin Laliberte (Easthampton, MA) and Jon Caldwell (South Windsor, CT) scored a goal in each half to lift the Owls to a 2-0 victory over local rival Elms College on Tuesday evening, Sept. 23.

Westfield State improved to 4-1-1, while Elms College dropped to 3-5.

The Blazers were outshot, 11-7, but they had three excellent scoring opportunities, including two in the first three minutes of the game. Elms College senior forward Brian Murca (Chicopee, MA) missed a wide open net when he broke down the wing past a pair of Westfield State defenders in the opening minute. Two minutes later, he missed from point-blank range as Westfield State junior goalie Lucas Dexter (Acushnet, MA) made an outstanding save.

Laliberte headed in the game-winning goal in the 20th minute off a corner kick by junior forward Ben Berthiaume (Swansea, MA).

Caldwell added an insurance tally in the 84th minute when he received a long pass from junior defender Justin Hilchuk (Wethersfield, CT), beat Elms College freshman goalkeeper Ryan Sullivan (Agawam, MA) to the ball and deposited a shot into the open net.

Sullivan finished with one stop in the loss for Elms College, which returns to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play on Saturday, September 27 at Southern Vermont. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
