CHICOPEE, MA, Oct. 11, 2008
- Springfield College seniors Greg Levings
(Averill Park, NY) and Michael LaJoie (Enfield,
CT) each carded rounds of 5-over par 76 to help the Pride
claim the first round lead of the inaugural New England Collegiate
Conference (NECC) Men's Golf Championship at Chicopee Country Club.
The Pride placed three golfers among the top six and posted a score of 324 to claim the lead of the two-day championship.
Mitchell (337), MIT (346), Becker (350), Elms College (356), Daniel Webster (365) and Newbury (399) rounded out the seven-team field.
Levings, who shot 39 in the front nine and 37 in the back, recorded three birdies and eight pars. LaJoie, meanwhile, posted consecutive 38's and had a pair of birdies and 10 pars.
Mitchell's Mike Lepore (Centerville, MA) fired a solid round of 77 (39-38) and if not for a double-bogey on the par-five 17th, may have taken the outright lead.
Elms College sophomore Andrew Sullivan (West Springfield, MA), who drained a pair of birdie putts and added seven pars, shot consecutive 39's on both the front and back nines for a 78 as the only other golfer in the 34-player field to break 80 in the opening round.
The second round of the NECC Championship will take place on Sunday, October 12 at Chicopee Country Club. Tee times are set for 10:06 a.m.
